Most still image file formats define both how images should be stored and how they are compressed. However, two of the file formats supported by QuickTime are container formats, which describe storage mechanisms independent of compression. These formats are QuickDraw Picture (PICT) files and QuickTime Image (QTIF) files.
QuickTime 3 adds support for BMP, PNG, Targa, and TIFF files to the list of file formats already supported in QuickTime 2.5: PICT, QTIF, MacPaint, Photoshop (versions 2.5 and 3.0), Silicon Graphics, GIF, JFIF/JPEG and QuickDraw GX Picture (if QuickDraw GX is installed). For more information, see the QuickTime Image File Format Specificationi , which describes the import formats.
Third-party developers may also provide graphics importers for other image file formats. Future versions of QuickTime may include support for new formats.
